Hindmarsh horror to motivate Roar skipper Craig Moore against Adelaide By Marco Monteverde
February 18, 2009 12:00am
THE greatest choke in Queensland Roar history will be skipper Craig Moore's prime motivational tool for the preliminary final showdown against Adelaide United.
Moore will recall the match when he addresses his players before Saturday night's do-or-die final.
The match is at Hindmarsh Stadium, where last season the Roar suffered a meltdown of monumental proportions.
Needing a win on the final day of the regular season to secure first place and an automatic Asian Champions League spot, the Roar froze on centre stage.
An error from goalkeeper Griffin McMaster set the tone for the horrendous afternoon, with firebrand Danny Tiatto's send-off for punching Travis Dodd the final nail in the coffin for the Roar, who lost 2-0 and finished the home and away campaign in fourth spot.
It's 90 minutes Moore desperately wants erased from his memory and the best way to do that would be by securing a grand final spot and an ACL berth with a win this weekend.
"The clear message from me before this game will be that we went to Adelaide last year with an opportunity to win the league and qualify for Asia and we disappointed that day, and we all felt terrible in the dressing room after it," the Roar's inspirational leader said.
"It's a feeling that I definitely don't want to feel again, and I'm sure the rest of the players don't want to feel it again either. That in itself is motivation to go out there on Saturday and get the result.
"It's funny how things happen like this in football, in that we're going back to Hindmarsh for such an important match. We're in the position again down there where we've got an opportunity. It's important that we don't let it slip this time."
Moore maintained the Roar's line that they are the underdogs despite the turmoil that Adelaide is in following coach Aurelio Vidmar's public revelation that club "politics" had derailed the Reds.
However, he did concede that Adelaide were awful in their major semi-final capitulation against Melbourne, particularly in Saturday's 4-0 second-leg defeat at Telstra Dome.
"There's no getting away from the fact that in their two games against Melbourne they were shocking," Moore said.
"But I know they're going to be so much better against us.
"There's a lot of hard work for us to get through if we're going to get the right result.
"I would still stay that Adelaide are the favourites for this tie," Moore said.
"But so long as we play to the level that we've been playing of late, I'm feeling very confident going into this game."
